Myalgic encephalomyelitis is also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Fatigue is certainly a big part of it, but it manifests in ways that people don't realise. People can relate to muscle fatigue, but they don't consider that everything our body does requires energy. It takes mental energy to follow a conversation, to recall what was said in a doctor appointment, even to react to stimulus. Chewing, swallowing, and digesting all require energy. M.E. isn't just feeling tired, it's not having enough fuel in the tank to go forward at all. This is why an estimated 20% of those with M.E. are house-bound or bed-bound.
