What Is PEM?

PEM stands for Post Exertional Malaise, and is the tell-tale sign of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. PEM is the crash that people with M.E. experience after physical, mental, or emotional exertion. Sometimes it strikes immediately after, sometimes it is delayed by a day or so.
Pacing can help people with M.E. to avoid PEM, but sometimes it is unavoidable. If you've had a bad flu before you may have a very rough idea of what it can feel like. My experience has been tiredness, extreme muscle weakness/not being able to move, confusion, brain fog, aches and pain, and headache. In short, it's miserable and makes you fear you'll never feel well again. Its scary because there's no telling how long it will last.
There is no way to rush through PEM, and no treatment other than rest and over the counter medication for headaches and pain. I try to make myself as comfortable as possible in bed and try to keep items I need within reach. I keep a small bottle or cup of water on my nightstand, making sure it's light enough for me to lift easily. I also have my phone and charger so I can message Daniel if I need anything. I keep healthy snacks nearby, plus headache medication. I usually don't use my walking stick in the house, but I do when I'm in a crash because it makes it easier for me to walk if I absolutely need to get out of bed.
An important thing to remember for anyone experiencing PEM is to not try to go back to doing things too quickly. Give yourself at least a day more than you think you need. If you push yourself too hard too soon, you'll end up right back in a crash. Go easy on yourself.
