Preparing for Disability

I once read that the only way to avoid becoming disabled is to die young, and that's still no guarantee. Most people, especially healthy people, never consider that they could become disabled. I never did. But between genetics, accidents, illnesses, and age, not only can it happen to anyone but it probably will.

I believe that everyone should prepare for becoming disabled. Preparing for it doesn't mean that you're giving up or that you aren't optimistic about your future. It's more like preparing to age in place.

If you prepare in your 40s or 50s, it could be easier to accept if it does ever happen to you. Even if you don't want to prepare for disability, you should prepare for old age. Get a handrail in your shower and get a shower chair. The bonus is that they make it easier to shave your legs in the shower. And shower rails have come a long way, there are rails that double as storage that don't look anything like traditional rails. Add a grab bar near the toilet as well. If you have steps or stairs in your house, make sure the railing is sturdy enough to support the weight of an adult. Replace door knobs with lever handles.

There is also financial planning, keeping your will up to date, and things like advance directives. Let your family know if you want to be an organ or tissue donor. People don't talk nearly enough about these things because they're seen as taboo. Planning for the future isn't morbid, it's practical.

There are more things you can do to prepare, but my tired brain can't think of them right now. But if you start now, you'll be used to having them around and it won't feel as awkward if you ever need to use them.

Have you thought about how to make life easier for yourself if you ever become disabled?
